OBJECTIVES : Middle ear consists of ossicles, tendons nerves and many mucosal folds. These mucosal folds are mesentery like structures which carry vessels to ossicles and divide middle ear into many definitive compartments. These folds also determine the course of various middle ear pathology, particularly cholesteatoma. Understanding the intricate delicate anatomy of the middle ear mucosal folds and their development is of paramount importance to an Otologic Surgeon. Hereby I present a 3-D computer graphics & animation model for easy learning of the same.
METHODS : In this prospective teaching project for Graduate Medical Students and Otolaryngology Residents, 3-D Model Computer Graphics and Animation was designed. Various computer graphics and animation software like Corel Draw, Photoshop, Quark Express, VRML, Macromedia Director, Flash, 3-D Studio Max and Maya were used.
RESULTS : An interactive, colorful, 3-D Computer Graphics and Animation of Anatomy of Middle Ear, Mucosal Folds, their development and their surgical significance which helps in teaching programs for Medical students as well as Residents. This user friendly model is also useful for independent learning.
CONCLUSIONS : Middle ear anatomy is complicated and needs lot of hard work and many temporal bone dissections to understand the same. This 3-D Computer Animation model, which has life like reality, can be a good alternative where facility for temporal bone dissection does not exist. Helpful for quick review of anatomy, development middle ear.
