OBJECTIVES : Adhesvie Otitis media (AOM) or atelectatic ear is a significant sequelae of serous otitis media which can progress to cholesteatoma and cause conductive hearing loss due to erosion of the ossicles. Various etiopathogenic causes have been described for the AOM. Eustachian tube dysfunction and negative middle ear pressure are the most important of them all. The goal of this study was to identify characteristics of eustachian tube (ET) function in patients with AOM.
METHODS : In this prospective randomized study, 50 patients over the years of 14 years, were assessed for various ET functions. Type of the test was depending on the status of the tympanic membrane.
RESULTS : Each ET function test was significantly positive for a normal a ET function. However, of the various tests performed, at least one test was positive in each patient.
CONCLUSIONS : ET dysfunction is a childhood problem due to various anatomical and pathological factors. The ET function return to normal state as the child grows. Although ET dysfunction plays significant role in the early pathogenesis of atelectatic ears during childhood, the ET function has less role in the formation of atelectasis. Other causes may play role in the etiopathogenesis of persistent atlectastic state. This study attempts to study the role of ET dysfunction in the pathogenesis of the AOM.
